Ceramic Vessel Arrangement

A ceramic-vessel arrangement reads differently from a cellophane-wrapped sympathy bouquet. It stays. It’s a home object. Six months after the service, the vessel is on the bereaved family’s sideboard or entry-table, a quiet continuing presence rather than a one-moment gesture. This is sometimes exactly the right register — and sometimes the wrong one. We help clients judge which.

This portfolio item is our standard ceramic arrangement format. Vessel: a low, hand-thrown stoneware bowl (15 to 20cm wide, 10 to 12cm deep) in muted cream or charcoal glaze. We work with two small-batch ceramicists locally, so each vessel is slightly different — part of why this works as a home object. Stems: white spray chrysanthemums, white lisianthus, ivory roses, muted sage eucalyptus, textural seed pods. The palette stays soft: no bright stems, no complex chromatic mix.

When this format is right: home delivery to the bereaved family 1 to 6 weeks after the funeral (not the funeral itself — that’s when a parlour wreath is appropriate), from a friend or colleague who wasn’t able to attend, or from someone whose relationship with the bereaved is ongoing and close enough that a lasting object reads as considered rather than over-reaching.

When this format is wrong: immediate-family sympathy (they already have home florals from the funeral service and don’t need another), workplace group-sympathy where a single-arrangement reads as too individual, or contexts where the Chinese traditional white-wreath format at the parlour is the only expected gesture.

Same-morning build, delivered between 10am and 2pm typically to allow family to receive. The ceramic bowl is the client’s to keep — we don’t retrieve it. Stems hold 7 to 10 days in the arrangement; many recipients refresh with their own stems once the initial arrangement is done, and the vessel continues in use.
